Xiaomi’s new folding device has arrived. Meet the Mix Fold 2

A day after Samsung lifted the veil on its new folding flagship, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Xiaomi announced its next foldable, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, at a launch event in China. This device looks like a considerable upgrade over the Mi Mix Fold from last year. It also looks like Xiaomi is playing the one-up game with Samsung in a few notable areas.

For one, the Mix Fold 2 is several millimetres longer and wider than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. It’s nearly a millimetre thinner when unfolded and only measures 11.2mm thick when folded. That make’s it the world’s thinnest dual-screen foldable phone. It’s also a whole gram lighter than the Fold 4.

Add another Fold to the Mix

Unsurprisingly, the Mix Fold 2 will use Samsung’s new Eco2 OLED folding display for its internal screen. There is a slight difference. It boasts a slightly higher resolution of 1914 x 2160 compared to Samsung’s 1812 x 2176 in the Fold 4. Xiaomi’s external screen is also ever-so-slightly ‘better’ than the Fold 4, measuring 6.56in with a resolution of 1080 x 2520 compared to the 6.2in 904 x 2316 external display on the Fold 4. Both displays on the Mix Fold 2 are capable of 120Hz, 1000 nit brightness and are Dolby Vision certified.

The two devices do share some similarities. The Mix Fold 2 also uses a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Probably because that’s the most capable Android chipset available at the moment. With that comes the same RAM and storage options. 12GB of RAM is standard with 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage options available.

Xiaomi has gone with a 50MP f/1.8 sensor for its main shooter. That’s complimented by an 8MP f/2.6 45mm telephoto sensor and a 13MP f/2.4 15mm ultrawide. This is also the next device from Xiaomi to receive the Leica camera treatment, following the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

Powering everything is a 4,500mAh battery that will feature Xiaomi’s 67W fast charging tech. Unfortunately, there are no wireless charging capabilities on this one. There probably wasn’t enough space in that thin chassis.

Pricing for the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 starts at CNY 9,000 (R21,590) for the 12/256GB model and tops out at CNY 12,000 (R28,780). Those converted prices will probably be higher if Xiaomi decides to grace South Africa with its latest foldable. If it does launch, it will probably still be cheaper than Samsung’s R38,000 offering.
