Anker’s latest portable charger – the PowerCore 24K – is truly a friend of load shedding victims and travellers. It’s housing a 24,000mAh battery, capable of receiving 140W of power while dishing out the same power to connected devices. With that kind of power, it’ll manage a 50% charge on a 16in MacBook Pro in just 40 minutes. That should be enough to hold you over for a couple of hours of load shedding.

It uses the new Power Delivery 3.1 standard allowing for a greater than 100W (Anker’s previous limit) output from a single USB-C port. The PowerCore has two USB-C ports capable of 140W charging, paired up with a single USB-A producing 18W of charging power. This means you can charge 3 devices all at once, though one may lag behind a bit. Well, a lot.
But that’s not all that’s new. The PowerCore has a built-in smart display, showing power pull from each port, recharge time and how much power is left. The screen itself can be turned on and off, to keep as much power as possible for the devices plugged in. There’s also improved AC-to-DC conversion efficiency, better temperature sensing and better total power output. It pulls all this off while living inside a smaller body.

In the box, you’ll only be receiving the power bank itself, no cables are supplied. And to make the most out of the PowerCore’s functionality, make sure to use Power Delivery 3.1 cables. Otherwise, you’d be better off with a cheaper power bank.
Getting yourself the PowerCore 24K could prove to be tricky, as they’re already sold out on Amazon. Anker’s site has it available, for a price of $150 (R2,400). Issue is, Anker doesn’t ship outside the U.S. But who knows? Maybe it’ll make its way to South Africa eventually. Load shedding certainly won’t be “over” by the time it makes its way here, if at all.
