You may have heard that a new movie channel is coming to DStv later this month. Well, it’s true. MultiChoice is launching a new channel for movies in August, dubbed Movie Room. The channel is set to only launch on DStv’s Premium package, at least at first. The channel comes from the Ngwato Nkosi Group – the same company that controls the Newzroom Afrika channel on DStv.
Something for everyone

The idea of Movie Room is that it won’t play one specific genre. It’ll play both international and local flicks, with something for everyone. “Cinema buffs, action aficionados, and casual viewers alike will be spoilt for choice,” said the group’s co-founder Thokozani Nkosi on Twitter.
We’ll need to wait until 27 August to lay eyes on the Movie Room channel. Channel 113 will be the home of Movie Room. MultiChoice has yet to say whether the channel will come to any packages other than its Premium headliner. DStv is probably testing the waters for Movie Room on just one package, for now. After a short period, DStv will have enough data to decide whether it’s viable to offer other packages or not. It may eventually arrive on the second-most expensive tier, to entice those even lower down the ladder to spend a little more.

So far in 2022, DStv has dropped eight channels, replacing them with just three. Movie Room will be the fourth channel added this year, meaning we may still see three or four more channels coming to DStv before the end of 2022. Or perhaps having to add four eMedia channels back onto the service, via court order, will count towards the replacement total. Who knows?
