DStv and MultiChoice have officially confirmed that its long-awaited Streama TV box will launch on 30 September this year.
The announcement was made last week, with the company explaining that the box had once again been delayed. The Streama was initially announced back in August 2020 but has faced many delays since. MultiChoice blamed the current silicon chip shortage for its latest postponement.
The delays seem to be over for DStv and MultiChoice, however. The company has finally decided on a date of 30 September to release the Streama.
DStv’s Streama-ing wars
If you aren’t sure what the Streama will be, just think Apple TV or one of the Android-based TV boxes, of which there are plenty. These boxes assemble all your media content in one easy place, like YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video.
The Streama will do all of this too. Of course, Showmax will be a staple for the device, since it has its own dedicated button on the control, right above YouTube.
The Streama was also delayed in September last year, for the same reasons – the global chip shortage being one of them. But the MultiChoice South Africa CEO Nyiko Shiburi also wanted to make sure the device would be able to hold its own against the big hitters.
“This box has to be really top class,” Shiburi said.
“You’re entering a market where there’s already so many media devices out there. You want to make sure that when this product goes out, it’s top-notch.”
This is a good sign for those looking at a new TV box. It means MultiChoice (hopefully) won’t just be releasing any old device for the sake of money. The company wants to compete in a competitive market and needs to make sure the device plays well for customers.
We still haven’t heard from DStv or MultiChoice about potential prices the Streama could launch at. But, if DStv and MultiChoice are serious about competing, they would need to release it for a better price. Since Apple TVs can be found from as low as R3,000, it’s easy to imagine DStv will want to launch the Streama for less than that.
Once DStv and MultiChoice announce the price, you can believe we’ll be there to tell you about it.
