Meta is rolling out a new ‘Calls’ tab for Facebook Messenger on iOS and Android. It’s adding the feature due to a rise in audio and video calls on the platform.
Call of the mild
Besides the existing Chats, People, and Stories tabs, you’ll (eventually) see a new Calls tab, where you can call friends via Messenger.
Facebook Messenger says that audio and video calling has grown at a rapid rate, with over 40% more daily callers in the app now compared to early 2020. Globally, over 300 million audio and video calls are made on Messenger every day.
Meta expanded the features available to its messaging service earlier this year. It added reactions, stickers, message-specific replies, and forwarding. It has added several AR effects to its video calls, letting users experiment with filters.
Messenger continues to borrow from WhatsApp, making the two apps more interchangeable than ever for those with the same contacts across both platforms. That might be no surprise, given the fact they’re both owned by Meta (formerly Facebook).
It doesn’t appear that there is an app update required for the new Call tab to kick in. Just sit back, relax, and wait for the feature to reach you.
