Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) has launched an online maths initiative as a part of its mission to empower South Africa’s youth. It will offer online schooling and math assistance to 1,000 Nelson Mandela Bay students. The e-learning intervention focuses primarily on grade ten to twelve learners.
The three-year pilot project was developed in partnership with education groups Tuta-Me and Odin Schooling. It encompasses seven schools in total. About 200 learners will access lessons on the Omang device, a secure e-learning tablet supplied by Odin. The remainder of the learners will access lessons via their cellphones. The seven Eastern Cape schools taking part are Newell High School, Nkululeko Public Secondary School, Phaphani High School, Solomon Mahlangu Senior Secondary School, Tinarha Secondary School, Uitenhage High School, and VM Kwinana Senior Secondary School.
Students, in addition to weekly online lessons, gain access to supplementary materials. Among these are guides, quizzes, and past tests. There’s also a 24-hour Ask-a-Tutor service for learners, for overcoming trickier problems. The teachers and tutors involved are all trained by Optimi Workplace.

“We hope this project will go a long way towards helping the learners to achieve good mathematics results, which will give them the opportunity to pursue their studies at tertiary institutions,” said Nonkqubela Maliza, drector for corporate and government affairs at VWSA.
The project is aimed at increasing the number of learners who achieve a university pass in maths at matric level. It will also expand the impact of VWSA’s educational initiatives in the Eastern Cape.
