Confirming many Batman fans’ predictions, The Batman 2 was officially confirmed by Warner Bros on Tuesday’s (26 April) CinemaCon panel. The most brooding Batman to date will reprise his role as Vengeance. Or Justice. It’s not totally clear which one he is now.
Details are as dark as Robert Pattinson’s eye shadow. But we do know that Matt Reeves will once again direct. According to Warner Bros’ head honcho Toby Emmerich, “the whole team” will suit up for the next chapter of The Batman. Hopefully that doesn’t just mean the film crew but Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.
The Batplan
The Batman sequel will stand alongside two upcoming spin-off series. The first focuses on Colin Farrell’s Penguin, and another centred on Arkham Asylum, which fans can stream on HBO Max. Here in South Africa, the shows are most likely to turn up on DStv and Showmax. Because HBO and Multichoice are pretty chummy.
Disappointingly, no release date, or any other information was revealed. Matt Reeves made a brief appearance to thank fans for going to see The Batman in cinemas earlier this year. It performed quite well raking in over R12 billion at the box office. It also garnered over 4 million views in the first week of its launch on HBO Max.
Truth or Joke
The first film sees Batman, who has been fighting crime in Gotham City for two years, uncovering corruption while pursuing the Riddler, a serial killer who targets Gotham’s politicians. In a deleted scene we see the Dark Knight consulting someone in Arkham Asylum about the new serial killer in Gotham. That someone looks very Joker-y. Could this be the sequel’s main villain?
Don’t be so sure. Reeves said in an interview with Variety “It’s not an Easter egg scene. It’s not one of those end credits Marvel or DC scenes where it’s going, like, ‘Hey, here’s the next movie!’” Maybe Reeves is saving Joker for future projects. There’s the Arkham Asylum show to consider as well. “There’s stuff I’m very interested in doing in an Arkham space, potentially for HBO Max. There are things we’ve talked about there. So it’s very possible.”
