Tesla wasn’t content with just making electric cars. It had to make self-driving electric cars. Those self-driving electric cars need pretty powerful computers to drive themselves and everything else that they do. Know what else you can do with a pretty powerful computer? Elon Musk seems to. Well, he would. We’re talking about playing video games, of course.
Video games in Teslas aren’t all that new. Back in 2018, the company launched what it called ‘Teslatari’, an Atari emulator that could play games from the 70s and 80s. The following year came Cuphead and Beach Buggy Racing 2. In 2020 drivers got Fallout Shelter integration to the Tesla Arcade platform.
But can your Tesla run Crysis?
But Elon doesn’t want to just stop there. According to Electrek, Musk has indicated that he believes “entertainment will be critical when cars drive themselves.” That shouldn’t be too far off, provided Tesla can figure it out without making safety officials angry.
If Tesla does eventually get that right we can look forward to the day when you can tell your car to take you home while you pick up your latest playthrough of whatever game you’re currently enjoying.
The aforementioned Electrek report also mentions a Twitter thread where Musk is quoted, saying “We’re working through the general case of making Steam games work on a Tesla vs specific titles.” This Twitter thread doesn’t seem to exist anymore but that’s definitely on-brand for Musk.
He has gone on record in the past with his ambition to run CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 in his Cybertruck. Maybe this is the real reason the truck was delayed. He couldn’t work out how to overclock his radiator or something.
With the revised versions of the Model S and X came Tesla’s new onboard gaming computer. Its specs put it on par with current-gen consoles. So maybe that Cyberpunk-in-a-Cybertruck dream isn’t too far away.
