While both Xbox and PlayStation have exceptional reasons to invest in their platforms, the Xbox currently offers immense value in the form of Xbox GamePass. It’s a subscription service that allows users access to a massive library of games — all of which they can play at will while paying for the sub. Now, there’s concrete evidence that Sony’s working on a service to rival GamePass.
PlayStation’s own GamePass
According to a report in Bloomberg, the service is currently code-named Spartacus, and it’ll function in a similar way to its rival’s service. Users pay a monthly fee and gain access to a library filled with both classic and modern games. The report explains that this info comes via Sony employees, who would prefer to stay anonymous. Well, because they weren’t technically allowed to talk about it.
It also looks like the service will consolidate Sony’s existing subscription services into one. This includes PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now (which isn’t available in South Africa). PS Plus is, however, and it’s required when players want to play online multiplayer games. Subscribers can download a collection of free games each month.
The Spartacus service will then include the above services’ functionality, in addition to giving players access to a library of games free of charge. Everything will likely sit under the PlayStation Plus branding.
It’ll also reportedly come in three tiers. “The first would include existing PlayStation Plus benefits. The second would offer a large catalog of PlayStation 4 and, eventually, PlayStation 5 games. The third tier would add extended demos, game streaming and a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games,” the report details.
Considering this is all merely rumoured at the time of writing, we can’t give any indication as to when the service will roll out. It will be available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, claims the report.
