There are two games that more or less defined shooters back when the only place you could play them was the PC — Doom and Quake. Now Doom has been back in the public eye for some time, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen any life from iD Software’s iconic shooter.
Quake-ing in our boots
This post wouldn’t exist unless there were the words ‘…until now’ to add to that last statement. The 25-year-old game (yes, you really are that old) has hit all of the platforms you could possibly want, at a fairly decent price. The game’s available on PC (R150), PS4 (R179), Switch (R179) and Xbox One (R177).
Why do you want to head back to a land before time? Well, this ‘enhanced’ edition of Quake now supports widescreen resolutions (up to 4K), includes new anti-aliasing, dynamic lighting, plus features updated models and depth of field. Then there’s the fact that all of the game’s expansions are included as well, plus a new campaign created by MachineGames (behind the recent Wolfenstein reboot) called Dimension of the Machine.
But wait, there’s more! Players will also have access to both online and local (split-screen) multiplayer, with up to four players offline and eight-player matches online. And, as an added bonus, if enough people buy this blasted thing maybe they’ll finally give us a complete reboot of the series. Or just a remastered Quake 2, with all the trimmings. That’d be fine too.
