Ford is issuing a call to all South African sim racers to strap in and put their (virtual) pedals to the metal in an upcoming racing-sim competition, one that could see them competing against racers from around the world. Dubbed the “Team Fordzilla Nations Cup”, this is the second time the automaker has hosted a racing-sim competition in South Africa, and the qualifiers begin on the 31st of August.
Get fast and furious with Ford
The event is free to enter and open to all age groups, and registration is open now. You can check it out here if you’re interested. The competition will be held on PC using Assetto Corsa, a popular racing-sim game. It’s online, so having a stable internet connection is a prerequisite, particularly for the later rounds of the competition.
Registered SA players will race for time during the qualifiers between the 30th of August and the 6th of September, looking to set as fast a lap time as possible. The circuit and car for this round are yet to be announced. Spectators and drivers will be able to follow the action via a virtual leaderboard.
From there, the top 20 racers will go head-to-head against each other on the 12th of September. The top 3 of this round will win a handful of “great sim-racing prizes” and will also go on to represent SA in the finale of Team Fordzilla Nations Cup in November. There, they’ll take on other sim-racer teams of three from Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the UK. The race will be live-streamed, and there are some “amazing” prizes racers to work towards.
“Being able to incorporate sim-racing with Ford’s long and proud history in motorsport through a variety of accurately-rendered Ford racing cars is an exciting new way to build an aspirational connection to the Ford product family and experience,” said Doreen Mashinini, General Manager for Marketing at Ford South Africa in a press release. “Esports is widely regarded as the fastest growing sport in the world. Having South Africa represented at an international level as part of the Team Fordzilla Nations Cup is testament to the popularity of the sport in the country, and we are confident that our South African gamers will rise to the occasion.”
