Microsoft’s “two-factor authentication” app, Microsoft Authenticator, has received a convenient new update. Similar to Apple’s new iCloud extension, Authenticator now has a feature that automatically fills in your login details for apps and websites, and it works across platforms and devices.
With this update, you can use Authenticator’s Passwords tab to access all the login information you’ve stored on Microsoft Edge. Then Authenticator will be able to pop up and fill in your login details whenever you visit a site or platform that you’ve saved a password for.
It’ll also import passwords from Google Chrome and other password managers, and then autofill them along with your passwords saved from Edge on any device you’re using. In tandem with this, Microsoft has also released an extension on the Google Chrome web store that lets you save the passwords you use in Chrome to your Microsoft account, and thus autofill them later.
In a blog post, Microsoft said that the passwords stored in Authenticator are protected by the app’s “multi-factor authentication”. It will ask for your permission and require a pin or biometric input before auto-filling your passwords, which are encrypted in the cloud and on your device, so there’s no need to worry about your login details being stolen from the app.
