Google’s in-house incubator, Area 120, has produced things like Grasshopper (an app that teaches coding) and tools to boost literacy. Now it has released a Minecraft-style game that helps normal people build their own games called Game Builder. Because you don’t need to know how to code.
So, using the Game Builder, users can create their own 3D games — even if they don’t have any game building experience at all. Game Builder is a free platform on Steam for Windows or Mac that aims to “make building a game feel like playing a game”. As it should.
But… I’m no Steve Wozniak?
Lucky for you, the Game Builder uses a drag-and-drop, card-based visual programming system, which doesn’t require any coding. Users can easily create their own Minecraft-esque mini-games or large games. Though it is possible to build your own cards in Javascript that can, in turn, be used in the game, you don’t have to. There are thousands of 3D models to work with when you’re building characters.
The tool is also meant to be collaborative, so multiple users can build and work on the same games simultaneously. So invite your friends (if you have any…). You’ll find Game Builder on Steam for PC and Mac.
