So you want to smell like a gamer, do you? Contrary to popular stereotype, gamers smell just like everyone else. But, just like everyone else, your mileage may vary (particularly on the final day of the rAge LAN). There’s a specific gamer smell on the way, however, courtesy of Microsoft Xbox and Lynx — the Unilever brand that we know in South Africa as Axe.
Which might be your first clue that this product isn’t destined for South African shores. At least, not yet. Xbox and Lynx are teaming up in Australia and New Zealand to launch a range of branded personal grooming products. There’s a body spray, deodorant, and shower gel in the offing, kitted out in Xbox livery. You know, green, white and black. To which we ask: WHY?! And also to which Microsoft might reply: MONEY!
My body is ready
Tania Chee, Xbox Australia / New Zealand business group head, told The Verge “We see Xbox fans achieve incredible things every day, and we wanted to celebrate that elevated skill, passion and determination by creating something truly special. Now, powering up can be as simple as a quick spray before you head out the door.” Weird flex, but okay.
As for the scent? Turns out gamers are going to smell like various forms of citrus (including one we’re not about to mention in SA), mint, sage, patchouli and clearwood. That’s not quite the combination we should have chosen but perhaps that’s why we’re examining technology and the folks at Unilever spend their time changing how people smell. We’d still totally give this stuff a shot. Just to see what it’s like.
The Xbox-branded smelly stuff is set to launch in Oz and the land of orcs and hobbits in July this year. There’s no timeline for the rest of the world but we might hear a little more at this year’s E3 conference, which kicks off next week.
