The past week has been one of the most tumultuous in South Africa’s recent history. The rioting and looting across the country, though mostly centred around Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal has left people, small and large businesses broken and terrified. Even those of us at the extremities of the chaos have felt its effects, have felt the fear and uncertainty it is causing. Godfrey Motsa, CEO of MTN, has released a statement that shares his concerns and emotions and calls on big businesses to give aid to smaller businesses and people in the wake of the recent rioting. MTN’s CEO,…

Valve’s been making (often slightly superfluous) controllers for a hot minute now, but a Steam-equipped console hasn’t ever been more than a rumour. That changes now, with the announcement of the Steam Deck, designed so you can play all of your favourite Steam games wherever you go. The Steam-powered console Setting the (in our opinion) poor name aside, Valve boasts that the Steam Deck is “the most powerful, full-featured gaming handheld in the world”. The handheld sports an AMD APU made up of 16GB of RAM, a quad-core Zen 2 CPU and an RDNA 2 GPU. It’s also got some…
We found out that streaming giant Netflix is planning on getting into the world of video games back in May, with the company looking for an established games industry exec to come on board for the venture. Now, according to Bloomberg, it’s hired its first one: Mike Verdu, previously of EA Mobile and Oculus/Facebook. Gaming is Netflix’s new fix Netflix has reportedly taken Verdu on board as vice president of game development. Verdu has previously worked with several mobile games companies, and even headed up EA Mobile for a year. He’s recently been working for Facebook, specifically in the realm…
While cryptocurrency is rapidly becoming more commonplace, with some countries even adopting it as a legal form of tender, in many other spheres it remains a suspicious mystery. South Africa has recently seen a local crypto exchange “lose” more than R50 billion worth of its customers’ money. It’s not really surprising then that FNB is taking a hard stance on the digital currency, and has begun blocking customers from buying cryptocurrency from overseas exchanges with their credit cards. FNB’s cryptocurrency cut-down The legality of crypto in SA has some caveats. See, unlike in China, it isn’t completely banned, but there…
Like parts of South Africa, recently the island nation of Cuba has been experiencing mass unrest. In this case, it is a response to economic struggles in the country and the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has resulted in goods shortages and power outages across the country. The Cuban government handles protest action with a stern hand (or fist, rather). Now it has restricted access to several social media platforms, possibly to disrupt communication between protestors and mobilisers. Cuba’s crackdown Protests had subsided substantially by Sunday evening, reports Reuters, but flared up again later on into Monday in…
In the past few days parts of South Africa have been rocked by looting and rioting in the wake of ex-president Jacob Zuma’s arrest. The rioting began in Kwa-Zulu Natal and has spread to other parts of the country, including Gauteng, making many areas unsafe and resulting in certain roads being completely closed off. While it’s probably best to stay home as much as you can (if you can), if you need to get around Gauteng despite the dangers, then we suggest using these maps that highlights dangerous spots around the province. Stay safe as riots continue The first map…
The Elder Scrolls VI may still be but a glint in Tod Howard’s eye, but if you’re feeling starved for some new Elder Scrolls content then look no further than The Elder Scrolls Online’s latest expansion, Blackwood. Blackwood takes players back to the familiar fields and plains of Cyrodiil, stacked against the humid Argonian homeland of Blackmarsh, and is chock-full of new content for both role-playing game players and MMO veterans to enjoy. For anyone who isn’t in the loop with this kind of thing, Zenimax keeps its players happily coming back to The Elder Scrolls Online (hereafter called ESO)…
Last week Twitter waited with bated breath for the Delhi High court’s ruling on whether or not it should be held personally liable for contentious content shared on its platform. The court ruled that yes, in fact, it should, and has left it to the Indian government to hold the micro-blogging platform directly responsible for content posted on it that violates the country’s new content policies. Twitter now has no other options but to comply with the Indian government’s rules, and so has appointed a resident grievance officer and suspended several thousand accounts for violating India’s content policies. Twitter concedes…
We’ll hazard a guess that everyone has seen at least one TED Talk in their lifetime. The Technology Entertainment and Design lectures are everywhere you look, and are enormously popular. Now TED Talks is riding the newest social media wave, partnering up with audio-only platform Clubhouse. TED Talks enters the Clubhouse As of today, TED Talks has committed to hosting several rooms on its Clubhouse channel. TechRadar suspects it will run these rooms either as weekly instalments, one-time shows, or as mini-series. The Clubhouse modus operand is certainly gels nicely with the TED formula. It seems like just yesterday we were sifting through every trailer and announcement E3 threw our way. Now we’ve got PlayStation’s State of Play to add to our list of title drops. June/July’s been a busy time for games. Anyway, in case you didn’t tune into the live broadcast yesterday, here’s everything it went through. And before you get your hopes up no, there’s no mention of God of War or Horizon: Forbidden West. Sorry about that. We’ll probably hear more about those titles later on. For now, here’s what we did see: FIST: Forged in Shadow Torch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1EHQKECRdE FIST:…
