If you missed the good news, the new owners of MultiChoice, Canal+, have secured the rights to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. It’s unclear whether the French broadcaster was having trouble acquiring the rights, seeing as it only confirmed that it’d broadcast the tournament mere hours before it kicked off last night, 23 July.

Typically, coverage headed for SuperSport is announced weeks or even months ahead of time. SuperSport has long been a backer of this tournament, broadcasting it for more than fifteen years straight. But after MultiChoice failed to secure the rights to the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, many worried its priorities had changed.
Whatever the case behind the scenes, the 2026 Commonwealth Games are officially underway. The Games taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, will come to a halt on Sunday, 2 August after eleven (hopefully) gripping days.
Canal+ confirmed that it would broadcast the Commonwealth Games on DStv, DStv Stream, GOtv, and GOtv Stream. Saffas will have to tune into either of the two dedicated channels SuperSport has set up on SS Variety 3 and SS Variety 4. The cheapest way for any South African looking to get their peepers on the Games is to cough up R300/m for access to DStv Compact. That’d be the streaming-only package, of course.
“South African fans will be eagerly anticipating the return of swimming legend Chad le Clos, who looks to add to his remarkable Commonwealth medal collection, while sprint ace Akani Simbine headlines an exciting athletics squad alongside world champion swimmer Pieter Coetzé, javelin star Jo-Anè van Dyk and exciting 400m talent Lythe Pillay,” wrote Canal+ in a statement.
