Despite our best efforts to be funny, we didn’t actually think Twitter’s ‘Official’ label would be making a return. Especially not less than 24 hours after it was binned. Since then, we’ve learned that when you’re dealing with Elon Musk, anything is possible. But here we are – the ‘official’ checkmark is back, for some accounts.
You can kind of see where Musk is coming from. Since Twitter Blue’s revamp, there hasn’t been a simple way of distinguishing paid-for users and users that deserve the verification tick. The reintroduction of the ‘official’ label changes that.
If only there was a simple, cost-free way of separating the peasants and verified users on Twitter. No, that’s silly. If such a solution existed, Twitter would surely already have the system in place, right?

This time, however, the new (but also not) label isn’t available for everyone. It depends on which country you’re using Twitter from. South Africa is apparently on that list, despite Twitter failing to knight Stuff’s Twitter account as ‘official’. Countries like the UK and Spain are still devoid of ‘official’ checkmarks.
We can’t be sure that Twitter’s ‘official’ checkmarks are here to stay. It might even be safer for Stuff to start writing tomorrow’s “Elon Musk takes away the ‘official’ checkmark once again,” article ahead of time. Please, Elon, we’re joking. Don’t do this to us again.
