After the box-office hit that was The Super Mario Bros. Movie landed on the big screen in 2023, it was only a matter of time until Chris Pratt warmed up those vocal chords to do absolutely nothing Mario-like in a sequel. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is that sequel, and Nintendo has dropped the first trailer.
Mario’s fame has reached the skies
Whatever your thoughts on Nintendo’s first Mario movie, Super Mario Galaxy looks like buckets of fun. How could it not, adapting one of the better Mario games of all time, which launched on the Wii back in the day? Rosalina joins the cast this time around, as does Bowser Jr. Did anyone else forget Bowser was tiny now?
Nearly everyone from the original cast will return to voice their characters, with the new additions being Brie Larson as Rosalina, while Benny Safdie was cast as Bowser Jr. It’s a slightly bizarre choice — not Brie Larson, which actually seems perfect for the character — but the co-director of Uncut Gems? We’ll see how it pans out.
We’re glad to see that Charlie Day’s Luigi appears to have a little more involvement this time around, as the two plumber-bros venture across the galaxy. We, at least, spotted some inspiration from Super Mario Sunshine as well as Odyssey (the upside-down pyramids in the Sand Kingdom), and plenty more besides that we didn’t see. And it’s only a matter of time before Charlie Day is captured and forced into a Luigi’s Mansion spin-off.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lands in theatres on 3 April 2026, with Illumination and Universal Pictures once again handling the film’s production, with some seriously cool animation to boot. We will be seated.
