Canon is releasing an updated version of its entry-level mirrorless camera, the EOS R50. With great video quality, but still lacking in functionality, stabilisation, and other cinematic features, the EOS R50 V is a decent mid-ranger made for smaller videographers like vloggers and content creators.
Add it to the Canon
Key improvements from the EOS R50 include 4K video at 60fps (up from 30fps), and a lighter body. However, it lacks an electronic viewfinder and built-in flash, relying solely on a 3-inch articulating touchscreen for framing. The camera shares the 24.2MP APS-C sensor and Dual Pixel AF II system with its predecessor, with in-body stabilisation swapped out for electronic stabilisation.

The new EOS R50 V also eschews built-in flash and an electronic viewfinder. Users can frame images through the touchscreen display, or add an external screen or torch for extra screen space or light. A redesigned grip with two record buttons should make shooting in landscape and portrait equally easy, Canon supposes.
The new camera comes equipped with enhanced video mode, including toggling between slow and fast shutter options, as well as electronic stabilisation to smooth out shaky footage. It also has a dedicated livestreaming button with four modes (including for HDMI, Canon Camera Connect, and Switcher Mobile apps).

The camera starts shipping sometime in April, going for $680 (∼R12,424) apiece on Canon’s main website, and is on special right now at $580 (∼R10,596). For $850 (∼R15,542), customers can bundle the camera with the camera company’s new RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 lens, which features optical image stabilisation, power zoom, and is controllable via a ring instead of buttons or dials. It’s still unclear when the camera touches South African shores, but a look at the local version of the website only offers a “Register Your Interest” form that presumably just puts you on a waitlist.
