The Checkers Sixty60 app’s new update comes with many new features set to make the platform even more appealing to South African consumers. Customers now have access to the wider Checkers Hyper range… with free delivery. With its R35 delivery fee that ensures groceries within an hour, Sixty60 is now an even more serious competitor to Amazon and Takealot.
Gone in Sixty60
The update gives Sixty60 a visual refresh, featuring subtle layout and font adjustments to improve user experience. While the interface looks sleeker, some users might find the new “Discover” menu more cluttered compared to the “Search” function it replaces. There’s probably a marketing reason for this.
Customers can also access the Xtra Rewards card directly through the app, a huge win for cardless consumers. They can also donate to a charity from a Checkers-curated selection.
Most notably Checkers has enhanced its Sixty60 delivery app by integrating Checkers Hyper products. The expansion introduces electronics, gaming consoles, camping gear, and more. Grocery deliveries continue to be available at a flat rate of R35. Checkers Hyper deliveries are free (with a R100 minimum) and restricted to specific time slots. However, product availability varies extremely by region for now.
With this update, Checkers Sixty60 positions itself as a competitor to e-commerce platforms like Takealot, particularly with delivery within an hour, the R35 fee on groceries, and a R350 minimum for free delivery on non-Hyper products. Takealot recently (and quietly) increased its free delivery minimum from R500 to R650, making subscriptions to TakealotMore or TakealotNow more integral to the Takealot experience.
While Takealot maintains an edge in the sheer variety of offerings, Checkers’ competitive delivery pricing is sure to attract value-seeking consumers, South Africa has plenty of those in this economic climate, even more so during the festive season. There is speculation about further integration of Shoprite products like furniture, which could significantly boost Sixty60’s e-commerce footprint.
