Comic Con Africa 2024 is officially underway from today, 26 September until Sunday, 29 September. While individual tickets for Saturday are already sold out, you can still grab a four-day pass for R700 which includes admission for Saturday, or stand-alone tickets for any of the other days at R200 a pop.
But that’s just the price of entry, you’ll still need to fork out extra if you get hungry or if you want to buy any of the thousands of goodies on offer.
That isn’t to say you can’t still make it worth your while. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the convention for the unassuming attendees to offset the cost of their tickets. We’ve rounded up a few examples but there are plenty more for you to discover.
Turning a profit isn’t only for pros
While the VS Gaming big winnings are reserved for the pros, it is also hosting free-to-enter competitions with New Balance vouchers up to the value of R3,000 up for grabs through Telkom Plus mobile gaming and eDiski tournaments. If you’re looking to make less of an effort, you could enter the daily raffles at its stand in Hall 5 to potentially win a few smart home goodies.
If racing is more your speed, Toyota is back as an official Comic Con Africa partner with its TTGE Engine Room taking up prominent space in Hall 5. That’s where you’ll find daily free-to-play Mario Kart, Brawl Stars, Street Fighter 6, and Gran Turismo 7 challenges. Then, on Friday 27 September between 13:45 and 15:10, there will be ‘faceoffs’ between Toyota’s chosen influencers and TTGE Engine Room attendees for the chance to win one of four R3,000 Takealot vouchers.
The Doritos Crunch Zone returns to Comic Con Africa 2024 and is the place to be if you claim to have any skills in fighting games or Beat Saber. This year, Doritos is holding the all-new Crunch Clash, a king-of-the-hill-style tournament across two sessions every day. Competitors will go face-to-face in Tekken 8 from 11h00 to 13h00 and Street Fighter 6 from 15h00 to 17h00 where the winner stays on to build up a Flamin’ Hot Streak. At the end of each session, the player with the highest streak will walk away with R1,000 of cold hard cash.
Sucking the marrow out of Comic Con Africa
If you’re more of a dancer than a fighter, you’ll want to join the Doritos VR league. Two sessions of Beat Saber (09h00 – 11h00, and 13h00 – 15h00) take place every day with the fan at the top of the leaderboard at the end of each claiming the prize.
Lastly, while you’re milling about, be on the lookout for the Doritos QR code for a chance to win a PlayStation 5 console.
Offline gaming more your thing? Head over to the Tabletop gaming experience, hosted by Unplug Yourself, next to Hall 6 to participate in the Bingo Card Challenge. You’ll need to complete certain activities to get your card stamped for your chance to win daily prizes at the Unplug Yourself Info Booths via a wheel spin.
These are just some of the ways to make the price of your Comic Con Africa 2024 ticket worth your while. We also saw a few opportunities to win double tickets to Comic Con New York in October, just sayin’.
