Now that Nothing is playing a more active role in developing its brand in South Africa (thanks to Cernotech), we finally have reason to get excited about the latest news coming from Nothing HQ: ChatGPT integration is coming to all of Nothing’s earbuds. Yup, even the company’s first pass, the Ear (1) from 2021.
It’s best to not let Nothing’s peculiar naming convention drag you down like it did us. If you’re after the latest and greatest, you’ll want to pick up the Nothing Ear or Nothing Ear (a), before moving down to the Ear (Stick), Ear (2) and Ear (1). Fear not, for the Nothing Ear (the new one), is coming to South Africa… eventually. Nothing is still trying to land on an exact date.
Something for Nothing
ChatGPT on-the-go.
Alongside Ear and Ear (a), our ChatGPT integration is coming to all of our audio products: Ear (1), Ear (stick), Ear (2), CMF Buds, CMF Neckband Pro, and CMF Buds Pro. Update your Nothing X app on May 21st. pic.twitter.com/KwdzsJSHbp

The ChatGPT integration is also coming to Nothing’s CMF brand, but at the time of writing, there are no plans to bring those into South Africa. The company notes in a separate tweet that, to make use of ChatGPT on the buds, you will need both a Nothing Phone and a pair of earbuds, plus an update to the Nothing X app, landing 21 May.

When that happens, you’ll be able to activate ChatGPT by simply performing a pinch and hold gesture on the Ear’s stem and then… have it answer your questions. That means directions while you’re out and about, random questions about life or even live translations. Pair it up with OpenAI’s brand-new (and free) GPT-4o model that dropped earlier this week, and it’ll take that experience to a whole new level with hugely reduced response times.
This isn’t Nothing’s first brush with ChatGPT. When it rolled out NothingOS 2.5.5 a few weeks back it introduced ChatGPT widgets into the mix that makes reaching out to the chatbot a far simpler process.
