MultiChoice Group – the owners behind DStv – has announced its annual subscription price hike, set to hit the country’s bank accounts on 1 April 2023. And no, as much as we’d like this to be a poorly timed April Fool’s joke, has MultiChoice ever kidded anyone about money?
Subscribers on DStv’s satellite packages will experience an increase by an average of 4.3% – an increase that MultiChoice says is “far lower than the projected consumer price inflation (CPI) for 2023.” Those on the company’s streaming package will not feel an increase.
Vague sentiments and price increases
“The pressure that consumers are facing due to remnants of the pandemic, as well as the continued rolling blackouts nationwide, has not been lost on us,” MultiChoice said. “These nominal adjustments help DStv to ensure that South Africans continue to enjoy the best value and unrivalled access to entertainment, anywhere, anytime, and at the most affordable price.”

But let’s get to why you’re here. Here’s what each package will cost come 1 April 2023:
- Premium – R879 (from R839 – 4.8% increase)
- Compact Plus – R579 (from R549 – 5.5% increase)
- Compact – R449 (from R429 – 4.7% increase)
- Family – R319 (from R309 – 3.2% increase)
- Access – R129 (from R120 – 7.5% increase)
- EasyView – No change
- BoxOffice – No change
It’s worth noting that DStv’s Access Fee, which permits users to use CatchUp and PVR is also getting an increase, going from R110 to R115 (4.5% increase).
Showmax will remain free under the Premium umbrella, though subscribers on Compact, Compact Plus, Family, and Access will get the service for half-price. 7.
