Reports are circulating of a new PlayStation 5 model in development, with Sony considering dropping the disc drive PS5 entirely, according to Insider Gaming. The detachable drive would either come standard with the new model or be sold separately to earn Sony a few extra bucks.
At this point, the PS5 has already seen two internal redesigns – first switching to a lighter heatsink, and later adding a different motherboard and better cooling system. Neither model change altered the outer appearance, opting instead to drop the weight.
RIP disc drive PS5 – you were pretty ugly
The new model would likely just be the Digital Edition, either bundled with or without a Sony-branded detachable disc drive. From Sony’s point of view, selling the disc drive separately would be a smarter move. It attracts customers to the standard Digital Edition, eventually drawing in people to buy the detachable drive that’ll cost more than it has any right to.
That’s exactly what Insider Gaming believes Sony is planning. The newer PS5 model would be the standard Digital Edition, except with an added USB-C port. This would be for the detachable drive, rather than using up the already limited one USB-C port the PS5 has.

It does raise the question of pricing. Will Sony’s console cost more, less, or stay the same? It’s possible that the recent change in price was done because of the company’s future plans. This could mean we won’t see any more price hikes, but don’t hold your breath. This is Sony we’re talking about.
Clearly, this isn’t on the top of Sony’s to-do list. After recently changing the internals of the PS5, it’s hard to see another change come so soon. We may be wrong, however. Insider Gaming reports that Sony is eyeing up a release in September 2023, just a year after its most recent change.
