WhatsApp’s latest experiment is Avatars; a way to bring some life to user profiles. Using an Avatar allows one to zhoosh up their profile picture, share them as stickers and eventually mask oneself during video calls. Because these are exactly the features everyone needs on the internet.
WhatsApp is profiling users
You’ll be able to choose your custom avatar as a profile picture once the update reaches completion. Unfortunately, we can’t be sure of an exact date. According to WABetaInfo, we’ll see the update in “the very distant future.” Once the feature is ready to roll out, it’ll make its way onto WhatsApp’s entire suite; Android, iOS, and Desktop.
We can be reasonably sure that this is one feature that will make it to completion. Parent company Meta is highly focused on pushing the metaverse, for various reasons. Founder Mark Zuckerberg has thrown a substantial sum of money at the idea so far. It makes sense that more of the company would turn to face in that direction.

It looks as if the Avatar creator will be similar to or an exact copy of Facebook’s own version. We can’t be sure, but it would make sense for WhatsApp to borrow elements from its parent company. It also gives us a sense of what we can expect from the update once WhatsApp begins beta testing the ability to create customised stand-ins.
