The Shoprite Group is expanding its online presence as Petshop Science, yet another store under its banner, goes online. The decision follows a pretty successful year for the pet industry. In just one year, Petshop Science went from having no stores in South Africa to 22 retail outlets.
The Petshop Science Online store offers more than 2,000 pet products, all available for delivery direct to your door. The store sells everything from food, treats, and toys from top brands like Rogz and Royal Canin.
“We’ve been trying to reach you about your pets insurance policy”
“We’ve been working hard to deliver superior service, range, and value to local pet parents. With the launch of Petshop Science Online, we’re adding another way for South Africans to access all of this – but without leaving their homes,” said Mark Cotton, head of eCommerce at Shoprite.
The site isn’t just convenient for delivery reasons. Owners can create a number of profiles for their pets, including the pet’s age, type, and breed. The site shows customised recommendations for each pet, like foods and toys best suited for the animal. If a pet becomes a loyal customer, the site will send specialised deals, tailored to the pet specifically.
Delivery for Petshop Science Online isn’t free. Orders over R450 qualify for free delivery. Orders below the limit will cost you R75. If an order is placed by 4 PM within a 60km radius from Sandton or the Cape Town CBD, your order will arrive for next day. Customers outside the Goldilocks zone must wait an extra day or two for deliveries.

If you’ve been looking for pet insurance, you can stop looking. The store offers insurance starting from R69/ – marketed as accidental cover. There’s also core cover, the next tier up. Lastly, there’s comprehensive cover, costing R350p/m for dogs, and R280/m for cats. The insurance is limited to dogs and cats, unfortunately. You’ll have to insure your honey badger somewhere else.
