It seems like every social media company is getting into the world of paid subscriptions. With Twitter Blue, WhatsApp and Telegram Premium, it seems nobody is safe from ‘pro’ versions of their favourite apps. Snap is the next company to join the trend, with the company announcing Snapchat Plus for hardcore fans.
Snapchat’s Liz Markman, speaking to The Verge, said “We’re doing early internal testing of Snapchat Plus, a new subscription service for Snapchatters. We’re excited about the potential to share exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features with our subscribers, and learn more about how we can best serve our community.”
This comment doesn’t give much information about Snapchat Plus. We know members will get early access to new features, while also testing possible new updates that could come in the future. That sounds like you have to pay Snapchat to be its beta tester. Shouldn’t it pay you for that? This is the only information Snapchat could give at this stage. That doesn’t mean it’s the only information out there.
The features coming to Snapchat Plus
While Snap wasn’t in the giving spirit when it came to info on Snapchat Plus, app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi spilled the beans on what we could expect from Snapchat Plus.
So… by subscribing to #Snapchat+ you can:
1️⃣ Pin a friend as a #1 BFF
2️⃣ Get access to exclusive Snapchat icons
3️⃣ Display a badge in your profile
4️⃣ See your orbit with BFF
5️⃣ See your Friend's whereabouts in the last 24 hours
6️⃣ See how many friends have rewatched your story— Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a) June 16, 2022
Besides the Plus users being given access to early features, there could be a few more perks lying in wait. The first being the ability to pin a friend as your #1 BFF – that sounds like a recipe for disaster. You’ll also be able to change the Snapchat icon on your phone. You can either go for a retro look or a whole new design. Check out the full list of icons below. How very exciting…
We doubt that’ll be the only feature coming to Snap, but even then, it feels like Snap is scrambling to add value to make a Plus subscription sound more desirable.
But, if you’re someone who cares about who has seen your story, you’re in luck. Snap Plus will allow users to see that info. It’s a shame Snap makes you pay for this feature, other platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp let users do this for free.

Friends will be able to share their location for the past 24 hours, allowing certain friends a peek into your interesting social life.
The cherry on the cake is the little ‘+’ badge Plus subscribers will get. That’s it.
Snapping up a Plus subscription won’t be cheap
Paluzzi also gave us an idea of what pricing could look like for the incoming Plus subscription.
#Snapchat is working on a subscription plan called Snapchat+ 👀

A month could end up costing you €4.59, with a full year going for €46. When converting that to rand, it’ll end up costing close to R80 for a month, and just shy of R800 annually.
Of course, these prices are still being worked on and could change before Snap officially launches the Plus subscription. But this gives us a good idea of where Snap’s head is at when it comes to pricing.
We aren’t exactly sure when Snapchat Plus will be launching. It could be tomorrow, next week, or a month from now. We’ll just have to wait and see.
