Oppo brings Android 12 to South African smartphones this March

Oppo smartphones are receiving an Android 12-based update, called ColorOS 12. The new operating system update will be available in South Africa later this month. Locally, it applies to Oppo’s Reno 5 and A74 models. Globally, it will reach 110 different smartphone models (which we don’t have available here, apparently).

ColorOS 12?

ColorOS 12 is the Android-based operating system Oppo uses on its phones. Nokia have vanilla Android, Samsung has One UI, Oppo has… this. This upgraded OS will offer improved RAM performance, boasts an AI system booster that sounds like Samsung’s Routines, and speedier access to app settings requesting use of the camera or mic. The update also includes smarter resource allocation. It should use less memory to run applications, which will help prevent premature battery drain.

These are photo things, in case it’s not immediately obvious.  Other camera tweaks include HDR, steadier video shooting, and HyperBoost Color Vision Enhancement. We’re assuming this has something to do with enhancing colour. Just a guess.

New privacy and security features include a privacy dashboard and anti-peeping protection. Which… might not be what you think it is. According to Oppo, it’s software that hides notifications when an unrecognised face appears in front of the camera. Should help keep your boss from prying. It also prevents third-party access to the device’s camera and microphone. Other new features include App Lock, Private System, and Private Safe — security-focused apps that keep your data more secure.

Other ColourOS 12 additions include advanced customisation options. This makes sense, since full Android 12 is all about making your phone look like it’s yours. Material You handles wallpaper personalisation, App Cloner… clones apps(?) and there are a whole mess of new icons and animations to screw around with.

Oppo’s ColorOS 12 updates begin in Indonesia, heading through Thailand and Malaysia before heading to the rest of the world. Expect your Oppo Reno 5 or A74 to snag itself a fresh new Android 12-based overhaul a little later this month.
