Bing Bong! Today, TikTok announced that soon all users will be able to create 10-minute videos. Which is stepping into YouTube territory as Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram are stepping into TikTok territory with Reels and Spotlight. Are we the only confused ones?
TikTok has always been the place to go if you need your daily dopamine boost. Short, concise videos about whatever you’re into. Content ranges from dancing to watching what influencers are doing in the newest and weirdest #SocialMediaChallenges.
How TikTok started
At launch, users could make a video of only up to 30 seconds at first, which was the main draw of TikTok. But then came one minute, followed by three minutes. Next up is a solid ten. We don’t really know what the company is thinking algorithm-wise. Accurately predicting what you like is kind of what we love about TikTok. It may be harder to translate that ability over to ten-minute videos. How are we supposed to watch that inconspicuously while on a bathroom break?
The social media platform last increased its maximum video time in July, when it upped video length from one to three minutes. When we logged onto the app today, the app told us that we can now create five-minute videos. It’s already begun. The #TooLongTok apocalypse is coming.
TikTok has long been one of the fastest-growing social media platforms, skyrocketing since its launch in September 2016. Mostly thanks to Gen Z, but loads of millennials got on board. #MomTok is also a thing, so the platform is widely used by many people from different age groups. The main question is: will it be used by those people for ten minutes at a time?
