The LA Auto Show 2018 in pictures

The LA Auto Show is underway this week in, you guessed it, Los Angeles, and if we had to sum it up in two words they’d be “electric vehicles”. If we had to sum it up in six words, they’d be “electric vehicles: so hot right now”. Seriously. Just about every big manufacturer has an EV — or at the very least, a hybrid or three — to show off for the event’s 2018 instalment.

Of course, being a US motor show there are plenty of enormous, fossil-fuel guzzling trucks, too, along with a handful of traffic-stopping (sorry) concept cars, some gravity defying displays, a few Fords on their sides, gaudy customised vehicles, a tank-like mobile entertainment centre, autonomous vehicles (many of them concepts, too), four Teslas, and (inevitably) a Jaguar E-type.

Oh, and did we mention the EVs and hybrids? We did? Well, to reiterate, they’re absolutely everywhere this year. Even Porsche has one. The most interesting among them in our view? Rivian’s all-electric 4×4… which we’ll tragically almost certainly never see on South African roads, let alone trails. And what 2018 event would be complete without a reference to the blockchain? Yip, we even spotted a car emblazoned with promises of blockchain-backed autonomy.

We also thought the motor show could serve as a good test environment for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro’s triple camera setup… so we shot all of the pics below using only it. Aside from a crop here and there, none of the images have been otherwise edited at all.

Right, without further ado, here’s a selection of the show’s visual highlights (click on any image to see a larger version of it):
