Load shedding has been around for far too long but there’s some relief in sight. South Africans are in for a lessening of the mental, physical, and financial burden of not having power, according to Eskom. If, that is, everything goes according to plan and nothing else breaks.

Eskom said yesterday night that today, 3 February, would see rolling blackouts stepping down their intensity to Stage 4. Saturday is supposed to offer further improvement at Stage 3, followed by a brief, blissful period on Sunday when there are no outages planned at all. All good things must end, however. Stage 2 returns to the country from 16:00 on Sunday evening.

The reason given for this? Improved generation capacity. Eight different generating units around the country have returned to service, including two from Duvha. It’s not all good news, though. Lethabo power station lost another generating unit due to a breakdown.
Eskom is also hedging its bets, saying that “…there is a high degree of uncertainty associated with this as changes are dependent on units returning to service as planned.” In other words, things may not work out this way.
