Apple’s off to a flying start for 2023, even if that start doesn’t appear to include virtual reality headgear. A fresh crop of M2 Apple Silicon-powered devices is due at month-end and now there’s talk of a set of M3-powered Apple hardware in the second half of the year.
But talk is all it is, at least for the moment. A report from Digitimes, which covers Asian supply chain news, suggests that there are M3-powered MacBook Air models in the works for some time after June 2023.
The M3 goes faster, right?
According to the report, “The supply chain is more focused on the more affordable MacBook Air, which is expected to be updated in the second half of 2023 and may be equipped with a 3nm processor.” But it might not be the best idea to put too much faith in the information.

It’s beyond doubt that Apple’s working on laptop hardware using an M3 chipset. It’s all about the timing and that’s where things get strange. Digitimes recently said that the just-announced M2 Apple products would be delayed later into 2023. That turned out to be incorrect. It’s possible that the platform is similarly incorrect here.
Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst and Apple whisperer, suggests that the company is sticking its M3 chipset into 14in and 16 MacBook Pro models in 2024. As MacRumors points out, that’s normal behaviour for the company — Air first, Pro second. And since the M2 MacBook Air was announced in June and launched in July 2022, that Digitimes report might not be that inaccurate after all. Still, that doesn’t mean we can’t get just a little excited, right?
