We’ll be using EskomSePush to track our water usage soon enough

EskomSePush

South Africa’s go-to source for load-shedding schedules, EskomSePush, is getting an upgrade soon. It’ll add water-shedding schedules (because that’s a thing now), calendar support, and fire reporting. Hermann Maritz and Dan Southwood, the app’s developers, said this was only a taste of the new features to come while speaking with Rapport.

EskomSePush is levelling up

What was once a side hustle for the two developers, has grown to become a full-time job. The app has gained notoriety and with it, users, as Eskom continues to implement load shedding. It now has over 6.6 million installs, with a daily active user rate of about 2.8 million. That’s a little lower than expected to be honest. Maybe if Sharon downloaded the app instead of asking on your street group if there’s load shedding for the third time, it would be.

After a weekend without load shedding, Eskom has brought it back, almost as if it’s an encore for a never-ending Nickelback concert. We’re sorry for putting that image in your head – but if we had to deal with it, then so do you.

As EskomSePush has grown, the team behind it has slowly added features. It even earns money through ads or through people who pay to remove them. With more money, comes more features. And that’s what we have to look forward to. If, and this is a pretty big if, load shedding does end, the app would need to offer other services to retain its users.

The beta of the new release will include the ability to report fires, a simpler UI, distance indicators for the AskMyStreet tab, and water restriction zones and times. We can’t be too sure of when to expect the next update, though we can guess it’ll be soon.
