It already feels like TikTok is just about everywhere these days (including on competing apps). Now it’s making its way to the small screen: your television. Or your smart television, at least.
That’s right, as of today the TikTok app is available on compatible Samsung and LG smart TVs as well as any Android-based TV device. Now you can endlessly scroll on every screen in your house.
TikTok takes to TV
“We’re taking TikTok to the big screen in the living room, offering a new way to experience the joy and creativity of TikTok together at home,” reads an official announcement. “With our mobile app, we bring people little bursts of joy, and the big screen experience allows families and friends to easily enjoy TikTok together.”
In the TV app, you’ll be able to binge content in your “For You” and “Following” feeds, and also browse the “Discover” page. Barring the device you’re watching it on, it’s essentially no different from the regular app.
TikTok says that having a dedicated smart TV app is all about watching content together, with your friends or family. We’re not entirely sold on that, considering how if you wanted your mates to see a video you had a good chuckle at you could always just… send it to them.
More likely ByteDance, the company behind the smash-hit app, is looking to extend its reach and bolster its ad revenue. Given the app’s runaway success, it wouldn’t shock us if its owners took the opportunity to squeeze as much cash out of it as possible.
TV-based TikTok is currently available in North America (and the UK through Amazon and Samsung smart TVs). There’s no word officially yet, but this feature will presumably make its way across the pond in time.
