Spotify plans to acquire audiobook distributor Findaway

Streaming service Spotify is evolving into one of the most comprehensive audio-based services around. It first became a household name for offering an impressive music library. It is increasingly focusing on podcasting and audiobooks, bolstering its variety for customers.

Spotify’s making moves

The latest news is that the service is gearing up to acquire Findaway, an audiobook services and distribution company. In addition to publishing audiobooks, it also functions as a recording and creation service. That means Spotify can take on the role of offering narrators and writers recording and publishing services.

“With this acquisition, we’re going to be able to accelerate the addition of an audiobook catalog onto the platform so that users can effectively get all of the audio content that they want all on one platform,” says Nir Zicherman, head of audiobooks at Spotify, according to The Verge.

Spotify will, according to Zicherman, ‘democratise’ the audible literature industry by making recording and publishing services more accessible.

In the past year, the streaming service has focused heavily on podcasting, enabling startup podcasters to grow by equipping ‘em with the tools they need. With this planned acquisition, it’s clear Spotify’s next focus is on audiobooks. We’re wholly here for it.

“Zicherman also says the core Spotify app will likely gain more audiobooks in early 2022 when certain Open Access partnerships begin distributing content there,” The Verge continues.

As to how long it’ll take to see audiobooks in Spotify, Zicherman says users will encounter them by early 2022.
