Clubhouse gets fluent, rolls out 13 new languages in latest update

Clubhouse

People love Clubhouse. That’s pretty common knowledge at this point. But for a social media platform that’s all about using your voice, it’s always been a bit lacking in in-app language options other than English. Now it’s rectifying that, adding in 13 new language options.

Clubhouse the polyglot

The social-audio platform announced the new languages in a press conference in India, reports TechCrunch, where it holds a pretty healthy user-base. The languages being added are:

German, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Malayalam, Italian, Kannada, Brazilian Portuguese, Tamil, Telugu, French and Korean. Interestingly enough, while this list does a pretty good job of taking us around the world, it has a few notable exceptions, such as Chinese and Russian. Clubhouse doesn’t say why it gave those a miss. Perhaps we’ll see them in a later update.

Offering your app in localised languages makes it a lot more user-friendly for people whose first language isn’t English, and goes a long way towards making users feel recognised and part of a community.

These new languages are reportedly rolling out to the Android version of the app first, before moving on to iOS. Ironic, considering how long it took the app to reach the Play Store in the first place.

“It has honestly amazed us that people in so many countries have managed to come together to do this on an app that only supports English,” said a PR rep in a statement to TechCrunch

And they’re not wrong. Despite its (up till now) entirely English UI, Clubhouse has a significant number of non-English speaking users and communities. It’s nice to know that they’ll be able to navigate the app in their preferred language as well.
