Spotify is reportedly testing a cheaper subscription plan

Spotify

Sometimes, you have that one friend who just won’t sign up for a music streaming service, simply because it’s ‘too expensive’ to secure R60 a month for complete access to a massive music library. Now Spotify’s working on something developed specifically for that market — a cheaper subscription plan that still serves ads but gives you access to more features.

This new low-cost subscription tier will be called Spotify Plus and will feature unlimited skips (the free version limits you) and the ability to search for songs/artists/playlists and albums. The catch is that you’ll still be served advertisements. It has to recoup the revenue somewhere, right?

Spotify Plus a few ads

The current free version of the app won’t allow users to skip more than six tracks per hour. There are also only 15 playlists available to ‘em. Now, those users will be able to pay only a $1 (around R16, depending on the exchange rate) fee per month for a more open music streaming experience.

According to The Verge, Spotify is “currently conducting a test of an ad-supported subscription plan with a limited number of our users.”

While it’s confirmed that the platform is working on the above subscription, that doesn’t mean it’ll necessarily make it to all the markets. “Some tests end up paving the way for new offerings or enhancements while others may only provide learnings. We don’t have any additional information to share at this time,” Spotify says.

We’ll probably see the streaming service test the new subscription offering via user-testing — a thing many tech companies enjoy doing.
