Apple reportedly developing a “rugged” smartwatch

Apple

The Apple Watch is a great little wearable that does exactly what you need it to while looking rather snazzy at the same time. Yet one thing we could complain about is that it’s rather… fragile. It’s certainly not the most robust smartwatch on the market meaning that folks that like to exercise and do other strange things with their bodies will most likely go to one of Apple’s competitors for a sturdier smartwatch. So the report that the tech goliath is working on a more durable, rugged smartwatch makes a great deal of sense to us.

The report in question comes from Bloomberg and cites “people familiar with the matter” as the source for these rumours which is about as vague as one can get but you gotta keep those sources confidential. According to the folks on the inside, this new watch is being designed to better suite the lifestyle of hikers, athletes and generally outdoorsy people with a suspected launch window of late 2021 or early 2022. This version of the Apple Watch will function just like older versions but will feature “extra impact-resistance and protection”.

Apple + Exercise = Health

What’s most interesting about this potential version of the flashy smartwatch is that the idea has apparently been thrown around for years. Internally, this new version of the Apple Watch is being called the “Explorer Edition” which is exactly the kind of grandiose nonsense Apple does so readily enjoy. While these rumours do sound viable, the production of the device is still up in the air as Bloomberg’s sources confirmed that there’s still a chance the project doesn’t see the light of day.

We’ll be surprised if that’s the case as the inclusion of a rugged smartwatch to Apple’s current catalogue would no doubt find an audience without much difficulty. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments as we come across them.
