Turning it up to 11
Apple’s iPhone 11, according to Omdia’s data, has sold more than 37 million units since the beginning of 2020. Those are very decent numbers in a global economy decimated by pandemic but they’re even better when you take a look at the other devices on the list.
That’s because the iPhone 11 has outsold numbers 2, 3 and 4 on the top ten, combined. The next most popular smartphone in terms of sales is the Samsung Galaxy A51, which has sold 11.4 million units since the start of the year. Numbers 3 and 4 are the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 (11 million) and the Redmi Note 8 Pro (10.2 million).
Samsung’s only got one handset on the list but competition for the top spots is fierce. And Huawei, which briefly dislodged Samsung as the world’s top smartphone vendor earlier this year, hasn’t made the list at all. The reason for this, according to Omdia, is that “Huawei’s smartphone business is under increasing pressure from US sanctions, impacting the company’s overseas business”.
