Pretty much every South African event for the foreseeable future has been cancelled by the coronavirus outbreak but it’s always sad to get confirmation of that fact. Comic Con Africa’s Cape Town event has been cancelled, and there’s no follow-up planned this year. Well, bugger.
Understandable suck
The event, due to take place from 1 to 3 May this year, as well as the associated Cape Town International Animation Festival, was effectively cancelled by the government ban on gatherings of more than 100 people. It’s no guarantee that the ban will be in place come May 2020 but it’s still a good idea to lock down the event. Even if it sucks.
Comic Con Africa’s Carla Massmann said in a statement, “The organising team is deeply saddened and regrets this unavoidable turn of events.” The event will take place next year instead, from 24 to 27 April 2021. The venue remains unchanged.
Concerning the international guests who were slated for the event, Massmann said “We are a close-knit global family. We stay in regular contact with them. Right up until this announcement they remained excited to attend the Con. They are just as disappointed as we are and we will keep you updated on all 2021 guest announcements in due course.”
