Just the other day Stuff reported that Nintendo and LEGO were teasing a crossover, throwing the springy Italian plumber into a blocky, LEGOfied form to take on the world. While we only had a teaser trailer to work with we now have a much better understanding of what Lego Super Mario is all about…and it actually looks really cool?
The aesthetic of old 8-bit Mario stages is actually the perfect for LEGO. Think about it, can’t you see the lines upon lines of LEGO bricks that could be used to recreate the iconic stages of World 1-1, 3-4 and 8-5? You probably only remember 1-1 but let us assure you…those other two stages are real club bangers. It seems that LEGO has also given this a lot of thought as they have now provided some solid details on what exactly LEGO Super Mario is all about…and it’s not a video game.
This new set of LEGO comes with a Large Boi Mario that comes with three electronic displays, one for his eyes, his mouth and a small box on his chest. The rest of the set comes with enough blocks to recreate levels from any of the Mario games, equipped with Goombas, Piranha Plants and little question mark blocks. There’s even one of Bowser’s children to help cause some chaos in your very own private mushroom kingdom.
What’s most interesting about this set is Mario’s ability to respond to the different blocks around him. He’ll be able to “crush” Goombas, obtain digital coins from the Question Blocks and even “take damage” from enemies if you want to insert a bit of drama.
“The new product we created together with the LEGO Group seeks to combine two different styles of play,” said Takashi Tezuka, executive officer and game producer at Nintendo. “One where you freely build the world of Mario and the other where you play with Mario in the very world that you have created.”
There’s no confirmed release date for this new set but given how early in the year it still is, one can only assume that the official launch will be later on in 2020. As for price points, it’s a joint effort between LEGO and Nintendo, so I think it’s safe to say that it’s gonna be expensive. Better start collecting those coins!
