We used to be told not to get into stranger’s cars and definitely not meet strangers from the internet. (It’s true, kids. Ask your parents.) Now we’ve got Uber and Tinder, which have taken us in the complete opposite direction. And, even though the thinking has changed some, it’s still risky meeting folks from an app. Tinder hopes to change that.
The dating app/service has rolled out a new verification system, similar to the one found in dating app Bumble. Users have to pass a little test in order to get a blue verification tick from the dating service, letting the world know you are indeed who you say you are.
Easier than getting Twitter to do it
Getting your blue tick from Tinder isn’t nearly as painful as getting a response from Twitter. It’s a method that lets users “…self-authenticate through a series of real-time posed selfies, which are compared to existing profile photos using human-assisted AI technology.” While possibly training Tinder’s facial recognition systems at the same time — but hey, at least you’ll know you’re actually talking to Tiffany or Ted and not some scammer with a collection of carefully curated images that don’t appear anywhere else on the internet.
A new Safety Center will be rolled out in specific markets (the US, UK, France and Germany) and is launching Noonlight integration in the States. The latter is a panic button system, for when dates go really south. Hopefully all of these options make their way to other locations soon.
