Netflix will stop working on some Samsung Smart TVs soon

Either Netflix has a big update planned for 1 December, or some Samsung Smart TVs are just getting old. Because according to Samsung, ‘older’ Samsung smart TVs won’t have access to the streaming service as of 2 December 2019.

Why? Well, the reasoning seems a bit vague. Samsung has said that it’ll stop working on certain older models due to ‘technical limitations’. Which leads us to believe that Netflix is rolling out an update that’ll be more demanding on hardware.

Is this the beginning of the end?

“Due to technical limitations, Netflix will no longer be supported on 2010 and 2011 TVs beginning on December 1st, 2019. If you have one of the affected models, you may see a message on your TV indicating that Netflix will no longer be available on this device. You’ll still be able to watch Netflix on your TV by connecting another device with Netflix on it,” Samsung explains on its website.

The problem we have with this announcement, though — is that there’s no indication which models will be specifically affected. We’ll have to wait and see whether Samsung (or Netflix) releases a list. Apparently, Samsung has been sending out messages — so if you received a notice, you’ll be affected (obvs).

What now? If you’re one of the unlucky ones, you’ll need third-party hardware to stream Netflix through the TV. Something like a gaming console (PS4 or Xbox One), a media box (like the Ematic 4K or a Xiaomi box) or even a Chromecast should do the trick.
