Apple vs. Samsung – Samsung hit with an additional $290 million in damages

It has been a while since we saw anything related to the (still) ongoing patent fight between Apple and Samsung, regarding patent infringement and damages that Samsung now owes to Apple. A new trial was ordered in March this year after the initial damage amount was reduced due to “miscalculation” and a new jury has come back with a result that hasn’t pleased Samsung at all. The jury in the retrial has awarded Apple a further $290 million in damages, bringing the total damages amount to around $930 million.

Both Apple and Samsung have commented on the jury’s decision. Apple said to AllThingsD “For Apple, this case has always been about more than patents and money. It has been about innovation and the hard work that goes into inventing products that people love. While it’s impossible to put a price tag on those values, we are grateful to the jury for showing Samsung that copying has a cost.”

Samsung said “We are disappointed by today’s decision, which is based in large part on a patent that the US Patent and Trademark Office has recently deemed invalid. While we move forward with our post-trial motions and appeals, we will continue to innovate with groundbreaking technologies and great products that are loved by our many customers all around the world.”

The new total in damages is below the initial damages amount of $1.049 billion but Samsung will be appealing the new decision. There is also a new trial set for next year to determine whether Samsung’s newer devices also infringe on Apple’s patents.
