Samsung’s Galaxy Fold devices are excellent, even if they’re retreading old ground more and more frequently. Something new is needed and that something might well be another version of the phone.
Noted leaker Evan Blass (@EVLeaks) revealed, in a now-protected tweet, that Samsung’s upcoming folding smartphone release — also taking place in 2024 — will be called the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.

It’s likely that someone at Samsung got to Blass (temporarily, we’re sure) but not before the information spread… well, all over the place. The Special Edition handset will, according to the leak, feature an 8in internal screen (when unfolded) and a 6.5in cover screen. That’s larger than the Fold 6 if you’re paying attention. It’s also thinner.
The dimensions given for the Galaxy Fold Special Edition so far are 10.6mm (folded) and 4.9mm (unfolded), considerably slimmer than the Fold 6’s 13.4mm/6.1mm stats.
There’s little other info available and nothing official from Samsung (yet), though there are rumours that the handset will use titanium in its construction and might feature an upgraded under-display camera. But don’t go getting too ready to take out another loan to own one (because it’s bound to be pricier than the Fold 6). It’ll probably not make it here.
At present, there are only plans to release the Galaxy Fold Special Edition in two markets. One of those is Korea, where a launch is expected from 25 September. The other market is undiscovered but it won’t be the US or in Europe. India? China? Possibly, but we’d have to wonder why Samsung is skipping the other larger global markets with this release.
