How confident are you that South Africa’s Springboks will win the Rugby World Cup 2023? Confident enough to put your money where your mouth is? Takealot is letting customers do just that, with the return of the #BackTheBucks promotion. To take part, customers will need to buy one of the selected Samsung TVs on offer. If, and only if, the Springboks bring home the gold, the online retailer will refund customers for their TV.
Takealot’s #BackTheBucks is back
It’s a big gamble and one that Takealot’s taken before. #BackTheBucks was born back in 2019, during the Springbok’s brilliant campaign that ended with a victory against England in the final. It obviously worked out well overall for the platform, despite the R4 million in refunds for the 346 buyers who took the chance on the Springboks.
Now Takealot’s bringing #BackTheBucks back, and this time around it’s upping the risk. With more than R10 million worth of eligible Samsung TVs between now and 9 September 2023 – a day after the tournament’s kick-off in France.
This year’s #BackTheBucks promo has five different Samsung models on offer, though the retailer is limiting itself to 737 units throughout the promotion. These units are sold on a ‘first-come first-served basis’ meaning you’ll want to move fast if you’re hoping to take part.
Here are the TVs on offer, and the number of units allocated:
- Samsung 43in CU7000 4K SMART UHD – R6,000 – 345 units
- Samsung 50in Q60CA 4K SMART QLED – R12,000 – 60 units
- Samsung 65in CU8000 4K SMART UHD – R19,000 – 50 units (out of stock)
- Samsung 65in Q60CA 4K SMART QLED – R16,000 – 62 units
- Samsung 70in CU7000 4K SMART UHD – R14,000 – 220 units

This year’s promo has already surpassed 2019’s competition sales figures, according to a MyBroadband report. That’s partly because Takealot has more units to work with and, according to Takealot, thanks to the Springbok’s recent wins against Wales and New Zealand’s All Blacks in the build-up to this year’s World Cup.
Should the Springboks win the final, Takealot will automatically refund any eligible customers “the full value of the purchasing price of their selected TVs to their Takealot accounts within 10 days.” You can check out the #BackTheBucks Ts and Cs for more information.
