Best before: WhatsApp adds expiring groups to latest beta

We’re not sure about you, but we often find ourselves a part of groups that we have no business being in. Even two, three or ten years after the final message was sent, the group makes a home at the bottom of your archived chats and is promptly forgotten. Or you just don’t care and exit groups the second they stop being relevant. Either way, it’s a problem we won’t have to deal with any longer, with WhatsApp’s ‘expiring groups’ feature.

First spotted in the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.5.0.70 by WABetaInfo, users got a look at expiring groups, which lets users choose when they’d like to exit a group before it leaves their mind. Whether it be a day, a week or some custom date – when the timer runs out, users will be prompted to exit and clear the chat. This only applies to specific users and not the other members at hand.

As WABetaInfo pointed out, expiring groups also double as a handy storage clean-up reminder. Users with limited storage space might appreciate the nudge, however small their reclaimed space may be.

Considering that the feature only recently appeared on WhatsApp’s iOS beta programme, we have no way of knowing when it’ll be made available for everyone, if ever. It’s likely that a wider rollout isn’t far off, though.
