Netflix will let you keep your profile when moving to a new account

Netflix

If we’re being honest, most of us here don’t actually pay for Netflix. We leave that burden to someone else; a parent, partner, or the random person’s account you managed to get into. It’s a beautiful site. That is, until the owner you’ve been mooching off of decides that they want you out. And the worst part? Paying for your own account. And of course, losing your personal profile isn’t much fun.

A change made at Netflix this week means this won’t be the case any longer. The streamer has made it possible for users to hang onto their individual profile even after being kicked to the metaphorical curb. ‘My List’, continue watching and personal recommendations will still be around after making the transition. It’s worth noting that account transfers only work when migrating to a fresh account, not an already existing one.

So, no Netflix and Relax?

The feature began its global rollout on Monday this week after a successful trial run in Costa Rica, Chile, and Peru. Each account will automatically have the feature turned on, except in the US and South Korea. Viewers in those countries need to opt-in manually through the settings.

Once the feature is available on your account, you’ll be notified via email. Once active, you can find the Transfer Profile option in the drop-down menu under a profile icon on the home page. Click it and follow the directions to start the moving progress. The gif above shows a short demonstration of how to get started.

Netflix claims that the feature is to help people going through big changes in their lives. But, it’s possible Netflix is pre-empting the sudden dropping of accounts if it ever introduces additional charges to crack down on password sharing. If this were to happen, many account owners won’t want the extra baggage on their account, forcing them to get their own account.
