Eskom is officially bringing back stage 1 on Friday

Load Shedding Eskom

Good news everyone. We never thought we’d hear ourselves say that for the continuation of load shedding, but here we are. Eskom has confirmed stage 2 will be sticking around until at least the end of the week. After that… we’re heading back to stage 1. Cue the applause.

It’s not over yet

“Due to the persistent shortage of generation capacity, stage 2 load shedding will continue tonight and Thursday 16:00 – 00:00.” So far, nothing is changing. The switch to stage 1 will take place at 16:00 on Friday, 14 October and potentially last for the weekend’s entirety.

“Eskom will publish a further update on Friday afternoon, or as soon as any significant changes occur.” So, if we don’t hear from Eskom until Friday, we should be all set to enjoy a weekend of stage 1. If not, then something catastrophic has gone down, plunging us into rolling darkness.

Since yesterday, Eskom has managed to bring back five generating units. One each at Kriel, Camden, Matla, Kusile and Medupi Power Stations. We were also warned about the loss of three other generating units; two at Majuba and another at Tutuka Power Station.

As it stands, 14,760MW is currently offline and being worked on with 5,021MW under planned maintenance.
