This is the LG Rollable smartphone the world will never get to use

LG Rollable

Remember at the beginning of 2021, when LG was still a smartphone maker? The company was due to follow its Wing smartphone with the LG Rollable, a very unusual take on a phone. But then LG got out of the smartphone game, just before it was supposed to turn up.

But it seemed like an almost complete project at the time. So what happened to the LG Rollable? As it happens, there’s at least one lurking around the internet. It was caught on camera, proving that LG’s experimental extending smartphone actually worked.

Rollable phones

There’s really not much to know about the phone. We’ve got no idea what LG put inside the Rollable phone. The internal spec is a bit of a mystery. Camera, processor, RAM, audio, all of it… it’s all irrelevant. The display is the thing, and this brief hands-on video focuses just on that.

The phone itself looks to be an internal device. All the icons are in Korean, but the phone itself is functional. But it’s the screen that’s the star of the show. It expands at the touch of an onscreen icon. It’s a little strange to see a smartphone expand horizontally and compress when it’s squeezed.

There’s a little weirdness apparent on the section of screen concealed in the side of the Rollable, however. Just like Samsung’s crease ‘controversy’, there’s some display weirdness. You’ll see a few lumps and bumps because the screen… rolls up inside the device. It’s going to happen.

Except it won’t. LG will never release the Rollable. But at least now we can be sure that it really was a thing. And the company had even stranger ideas in the pipe. We won’t see those either. Pity.
